A Press Release by Catherine Groves

The following is pretty much a random selection from the countless press releases I've written over the years. This one features a news event, in the shape of a very worthy cause: a local literacy program. The financial institution that commissioned the press release is highlighted after establishing the newsworthy event.

Almost 40,000 Orange County Adults Can't Read This
These Are Figures Warwick Savings Foundation Doesn't Like

Warwick, NY — May 5, 2000 — The statistics are startling. In Orange County, an estimated 37-40,000 adults are functionally illiterate. In some communities, the percentages are even more mind-boggling: 23% of Middletown adults, reports Linda Aumick, Executive Director of LVA – Middletown, NY Inc., cannot read the simple phrases essential to everyday life. In a nation that takes reading for granted, astronomical numbers still slip through the cracks.

Fortunately, Literacy Volunteers of America – Middletown, NY Inc. is hard at work to change this scenario. Linda Aumick explains how the organization focuses its efforts on tutoring adults. At any given point in time, between 100–150 volunteers, having completed an intensive 21-hour training program at the group's headquarters at the Middletown Thrall Library, are ready to teach. The individual goals of each learner guide the one-to-one tutoring sessions, usually conducted at one of the local public libraries in western Orange County. In addition to one-to-one tutoring in basic reading skills. Conversational English (English as a Second Language) is offered, generally in a group setting.

When Literacy Volunteers of America – Middletown, NY Inc. approached The Warwick Savings Foundation for operating capital, they found the Foundation ready and willing to help. In fact, assisting vital community projects is the reason for its existence. Since its inception in 1997, The Warwick Savings Foundation, established by Warwick Community Bancorp, Inc., the holding company for The Warwick Savings Bank, has awarded more than $250,000 in grants to various historical, cultural and educational Orange Country organizations. More information about The Warwick Saving Foundation or The Warwick Savings Bank can be obtained by calling (987) 654-3210.
